Abanilla's Río Chícamo: a ribbon of water through dry country

en Published 20 September 2026

The Río Chícamo is the kind of river that changes how a dry landscape looks. In the Abanilla municipality, its water threads through pale gypsum slopes and sharply eroded ravines. Reeds and other river plants gather where water persists, making a narrow green corridor in country that can appear almost bare from a distance.

The local story

The protected fluvial reserve is valued for both its unusual geology and the habitats supported by water. Erosion has made gullies and badland forms; the river has cut through and deposited material across them. That meeting of processes is more interesting than any single viewpoint. The landscape is also fragile, and seasonal flow can change the safety of a route very quickly.

Plan the visit

Choose an established public itinerary and check local conditions before leaving Abanilla. Some reaches are hard to pass where vegetation closes in, and a dry forecast at the start is no guarantee after upstream rain. Stay out of unstable banks and do not disturb the water or plants. Carry water, avoid peak heat and allow a relaxed return rather than improvising a crossing.

How it connects

Fortuna's thermal springs show a different expression of water in the same dry corner of Murcia.
